Introduction

Newly established in 2010, the College of Medical Science and Technology (CoMST) is the youngest college of the Taipei Medical University. Seeking to become the most internationalized and research-oriented college of its kind, the College of Medical Science and Technology has established five institutes: the School of Medical Laboratory Science and Biotechnology, the Graduate Institute of Biomedical Informatics, the Institute of Cancer Research and Drug Discovery, the Institute of Neuro-regenerative Medicine, and the Institute of Translational Medicine.

The college focuses on the translation of information and communication technology (ICT), biotechnology, biomedical engineering and biomedical informatics into clinical and health care uses. It has been renowned by its advanced applications of ICT to its three teaching hospitals in the past 15 years, partly due to the creation of the Graduate Institute of BioMedical Informatics (GIMI) in 1998. GIMI is the first graduate program of its kind in South-East Asia and it has since then built its reputation worldwide.

The College of Medical Science and Technology hosts three new graduate programs that focus on cancer, regenerative and translational medicine. The Institute for Cancer Biology and Drug Discovery (ICBDD) and the Institute of Translational Medicine are results of in-depth collaboration with the Academia Sinica. As one of the nation's Centers of Excellence for Cancer Research, ICBDD is now working very closely with the Oncology departments from the Taipei Medical University's three teaching hospitals and aims to become one of the world-leading cancer research centers.

The Institute for Neural Regenerative Medicine is another successful integration of Taiwan’s best research practices between TMU and the National Health Research Institutes (NHRI). The best neruo-trauma and neuro-regenerative experts gathered together to form this program. World-famous scholars such as Dr.Barry Hoffer (previous Science Director from National Institutes of Health of United States and the Founding Director) and Dr.Wen-ta Chiu (Minister of Health), worked closely with the Neurosurgery, Neurology, Trauma, and Stem cell departments, to set up this institute as one of the top-notched neural regenerative research centers in the world.
